DUSTY RHODES FRONT MAN DOES A WYCLEF JEAN
There’s good and bad news from Dusty Rhodes and the River Band.
First, the bad: They’re calling it quits, sooner rather than later. Probably even by October, says front man Dustin Apodaca.
Now the good: Apodaca is trading tour vans and concert lights for handshakes and political speeches. He’s running for a seat on the Anaheim City Council. “I’ve always wanted to do it,” Apodaca said. “It was just a matter of time. But now that Dusty Rhodes is ending, I can do this, and it will work out perfectly. I was going to run four years ago, but we were touring and we just got signed, and it couldn’t have happened.” Last week, he filed all the paperwork needed. Originally, Apodaca said, he wanted to run for mayor, “but I figured it would be too demanding.” What’s Apodaca’s platform, then? “I want to make sure things are done correctly,” he said. That includes making sure the 800-mile-long, high-speed rail line being built from Anaheim to San Francisco (making the trip about three hours’ long) is done right. “I’m worried it’s not going to be a Maglev, but that it’ll be gnarly technology from Japan,” he said. “The Maglev’s the future.” Plus, he wants to see learning Spanish part of the curriculum in Anaheim schools. SOCIAL D’S MIKE NESS SELLING TWO OC HOMES
The Orange County Register reports that punk legend Mike Ness of Social Distortion is selling a house he owns on the Balboa Peninsula, in addition to a vintage home in Lemon Heights he already put on the market. The Newport Beach domain, built in 1946, is listed at $1,295,000, or $637 per square foot. The 2,033-square-foot house has three bedrooms and one bath, and it’s on a 2,450-square-foot lot. According to the Register, Ness doesn’t live on the property, having found another house in the area he likes better. Ness was originally selling the Lemon Heights abode for $2,100,000; he has lowered the price to $1,800,000. The 4,000-square-foot, gated house was built on a half-acre lot in 1924 and has three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths. Maybe these homes aren’t punk rock enough? From an Aug. 6 post.
HURLEY (NOT THE BRAND) ON THE COVER OF WEEZER’S ALBUM
For Weezer’s upcoming eighth LP, actor and San Clemente native Jorge Garcia, better known as Hurley from Lost, will be on the cover. Weezer front man Rivers Cuomo told Spinner.com they picked Garcia’s photo before they named the album because of its great vibe. The band called it Hurley as well—knowing that if they didn’t include a title for the album, people would just refer to it as “the Hurley record.” Apparently, Cuomo called Garcia more than a month ago; a few weeks ago, he flew up to Paso Robles for a Weezer show and got a JPG of the cover then. Hurley will drop Sept. 14 on Epitaph—Weezer’s first time on an indie. From an Aug. 9 post.
