Today, Desert Daze--a homegrown SoCal psych fest orbiting around Coachella--announced the lineup for it's second annual event happening on April 20 (we won't make the joke...too easy). But for those expecting a repeat of last year's 11-day bacchanal at Dillon's Road House in Palm Springs, you should know that this year, things have changed quite a bit...
For one thing, they've gone international. This year's headliner is Grammy Award-winning, Mali-based World Music actTinariwen
, who will be trading the Sahara desert for a California desert alongside a squall of LA and OC-based acts includingWar Paint
andDeath Hymn Number 9
. So far 12 bands are confirmed with many more to be announced in the coming days, says festival-founderPhil Pirrone
. Pirrone also runs promotional company Moon Block Party which is presenting the event. See the the announced lineup below.
Desert Daze 2.0 also marks it's evolution in an unconventional way--by condensing the extra-long festival vibe down to a one-day experience of live music, art, food and overnight camping. It's being held at Sunset Ranch, a desert oasis set against a backdrop of purple mountains and miles of palm trees, in the the town of Mecca (about 25 minutes southeast of Indio near the Salton Sea). For Pirrone, the desire to change the format and venue of the festival was something he's been thinking about since before the first run of Desert Daze even began.
"We wanted to do an event with overnight camping and also the 11-day thing is something we want to do again but we feel like its an every-five-years type of thing. We ant that kind of experience to remain special. The cool thing about Moon Block Party is that were always finding cool new ways of doing things and never repeating ourselves."
