We warned you about this guy: Bad Boy Bill (pictured) is a rare nightlife soldier in a scene overrun with DJ debutantes. The Chicago house spinner can mix with the skills of the swiftest hip-hop battle DJ, but he reserves his weapons for his up-tempo cyclone sets. His quick mix style seems to be the lost art of an aging generation raised on mix-show radio, yet it's coming back with the push-button mix-and-match of the laptop kids. Mr. Bill gets the attention-deficit crowd hypnotized. The Bad one continues to celebrate the recent release of his debut studio long-player, The Album, with a stop at Code in Newport Beach.
4221 Dolphin Striker Way, Newport Beach. 21+. Doors at 9. Free with RSVP.
On Monday, August 31, the hottest musical trend to hit the super-clubs in the last five years, minimal techno, hits the O.C. with Minimal Mondays at iLounge in Irvine. While we would question the minimal-ness of minmal (the sound, which pairs the stark drum-and-cymbal sound of techno with the synthetic tunefulness of progresive house), we don't question its appeal. Whatever you call it, there's a futuristic appeal in the machine soul of bottom-heavy dance music. And the office-park wasteland of Irvine is the perfect place to inject some human networking. West Coast technician Erphun, who's as funky and tribal as he is teutonic, mans the decks for the inaugural event.
18912 MacArthur Blvd., Irvine. 21+. Doors at 10 p.m. Free with RSVP to info at erphun dot com.
