Avalon Hollywood

On Friday night, we headed to Hollywood for CONTROL at the infamous Avalon Nightclub for its fourth-anniversary party, featuring sounds from Jack Beats, Carnage and Whiite. Ryan Jaso, who also manages several well-known DJs from Orange County and LA such as PeaceTreaty and Whiiite, has built an incredible Friday-night institution with CONTROL as one of the premier 19-and-over clubs discovering and bringing world-class DJs when it comes to electro, dubstep and trap EDM. You never know what kind of surprise guest will drop in at Avalon on this staple night, and this anniversary was no exception with Borgore, Dillon Francis, 12th Planet, Flinch, Kill the Noise, Rusko, Jillionare, Barestep, Craze to Krewella all in attendance to celebrate the milestone.

The vibrant promoters behind CONTROL have challenged dance music and been the innovators to give some of the biggest artists their first LA breakthrough such as Skrillex, Wolfgang Gartner, Nero and Porter Robinson. The fourth anniversary proved to be a magical night for the EDM community, as the line to get in was stretching all the way to the parking lot even at 11:30 p.m. Revelers from all walks came out to rage and celebrate their love for the bass-heavy and electro music that is taking over the airwaves on iHeartRadio's “Evolution.” Listeners from all over can now get a taste of some of electronic's best new and seasoned artists on CONTROL's weekly radio spot Saturday's at 5 p.m., featuring exclusive live broadcasts from Friday night.

Imagine a major music venue or darklight dance club with an ample dance floor, several smaller rooms with other DJs, upstairs balcony to sit and relax, and music bumping until 6 in the morning. That's exactly what Avalon has to offer: an escape from the real world and opportunity to get lost in some intense beats and check out some of the biggest names in electronic dance music.

Guatemalan DJ Carnage stole the show that evening and made sure everyone turned up, playing a seamless mix of trap, dubstep and house beats, including his new collaboration with Borgore “Incredible” that is currently holding the No. 1 spot on the Beatport electro chart for the second week. The song was even more epic on the massive Avalon sound system, which sent rattling bass drops through your spine. Of course, Borgore joined Carnage on the decks and gave the audience a show, asking everyone to flash him, jumping up and down and getting crazy with Carnage in the DJ booth. Carnage ended the set toward the end with a house version of Ace of Base's “The Sign” that had everyone singing along in anticipation for the main act.

By the time Jack Beats came on at 12:30 a.m., Avalon was a complete shit show — and we say this with endearment. The sold-out party was packed to the walls, and everyone from the VIP tables to the backstage was filled with ratchet debauchery going on. It was pure madness and incredibly awesome at the same time. The U.K. duo Jack Beats continued the soundtrack for the evening, playing a mix of their own originals, the top EDM songs of the moment and their new remix of Major Lazer's “Jah No Partial,” which was complete fire on the dance floor. Dillon Francis hopped on the decks halfway through the set, bringing out the moombahton and their collaboration “Epidemic.” They ended with their remix of “Drop the Pressure,” making the crowd go nuts!

When resident DJ Whiiite came on past 2 a.m., the club was still packed and the party still going strong. Whiiite showed off his new audio-visual show with the giant LED wall, fog machines and lasers still in full force. He brought the darkness out with deep sounds and played everything from electro to glitch hop, keeping the crowd going hard well into the early morning.

Personal Bias: First time seeing Carnage, and I was thoroughly impressed. I think it's admirable how DJs can play and produce music in all sorts of subgenres, not because it's a fad, but because they enjoy it. Usually, these are the few who actually do it right.

The Crowd: Was everyone from fluffy-wearing ravers, bass heads, electro lovers, industry people, bottle-service crowds and, of course, famous DJs — practically everyone in LA was here.

Overheard In the Crowd: “Jack Beat's production value is insane. They never disappoint.”

Random Notebook Dump: Can't forget to mention the crazy mosh pit during Carnage. His set was popping!
