Coming Soon: Flight of the Conchords Movie?

Bret McKenzie, one half of New Zealand's "4th most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo" Flight Of The Conchords, has been busy making the rounds promoting The Muppets movie, which featured several tracks he penned, including Oscar nominee "Life's A Happy Song."

A few days ago, perhaps encouraged by the success of the Muppets soundtrack, he announced that a FOTC movie is in the works. Says McKenzie: "We're going to try and do a movie. We just need a story."

McKenzie joked, "I'm gonna go back to New Zealand tomorrow, maybe film it next week. And then edit it the week after. I don't know how familiar you are with movies, but there's a lot of behind the scenes stuff that could take one or two weeks. And then, probably in about a month we'll have a premiere."

Flight started out as a radio show before graduating to TV. After the success of the first series, they were asked back for a second. But after two television seasons and two albums of quirky musical comedy, the Flight of the Conchords guys called it quits in 2009.

Fans have begged for more episodes since the series ended, but to no avail. McKenzie and FOTC co-star Jemaine Clement issued this statement: "We've noticed the less we say about the future of the show, the more people want to talk about it, so in an effort to reverse this trend we are today announcing that we won't be returning for a 3rd season. We're very proud of the two seasons we made and we like the way the show ended [...] While the characters Bret and Jemaine will no longer be around, the real Bret and Jemaine will continue to exist."

Since then, both McKenzie and Clement have landed bit parts in several films. Clement is in Despicable Me, Dinner for Schmucks and Rio, and plays Boris in the upcoming Men in Black III. McKenzie appears as an elf in the Lord of the Rings films.

Obviously a FOTC movie is a bit of a ways off, but we're pretty excited that it (probably) is going to happen.
