Coachella "Leaks," Confirmations and Rumors
Attendees at last years Coachella
Andrew Youseff / OC Weekly
It's almost crunch time and Coachella line-up announcements should come about at the end of the month. Yet, this still leaves a couple of weeks of fake-line up posters, rumors, speculation and "leaks" to go around the internet and spread like wildfire. Remember when we could buy tickets at the door the day of the fest? Yeah those were the good old days. Today we have to deal with sell outs, scalpers, fence hoppers, astronomical prices for lodging and sitting at the edge of our seats hoping that this years line-up will be worth all of the fuss (yet it always is, isn't it?). So what can we expect under the desert sun of the Empire Polo Field this year?

So far there have been several "confirmed" acts from artists who disclosed their Coachella involvement a tad bit early. Claude VonStroke and his Dirtybird Record Label crew announced it on their website back in November with rumors of a possible stage takeover in the works. While promoting Sonar Festival in LA the legendary Paul Kalkbrenner revealed to Pure Volume he was excited to play Coachella in 2013 "because he has never been." Jake Stanczak known in the bass community as Kill The Noise told Billboard in an interview he will be appearing this year. Dutch duo Bingo Players' agency AM Only listed their attendance on their website while fellow Dutch DJ Hardwell listed it on his Facebook page (both have since been removed). Also Major Lazer announced it's 2013 North American Free the Universe World Tour with no dates near LA except a stop in San Francisco Mar 28th before they head out to Europe April 25th. Seems like a long gap in between with possible Coachella gigs.
The British singer Alex Clare told Rolling Stone that he would be playing SXSW and Coachella in 2013 during an interview at KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas. Sixto "Sugar Man" Rodriguez (Sugar who?) lists the Empire Polo Field on his tour schedule both weekends. While The Underachievers tweeted "Course were doing Coachella motha fuckas!" on Friday. On the S.S. Coachella cruise Paul Tollet apparently confirmed J Tillman, better known as Father John Misty's appearance. Fellow cruise ship performer Grimes, born Claire Boucher, hinted her performance on Twitter. Other possible contenders are Hot Chip who was one of the cruise's headliners and will already be in the states for Ultra Music Festival. As well as Warpaint who has a new album coming out soon. Not to mention all of the potential Coachella artists who have West Coast tour dates around Coachella like Sigur Rós, Tegan & Sara, Two Door Cinema Club and Local Natives.
David Bowie, a possible headliner at Coachella 2013
In December the event ticket site Songkick evidently sent their followers an email blast which listed The Rolling Stones, Daft Punk, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Phoenix performing at the festival. We already have reason to anticipate The Rolling Stones who posted Friday April 12th at Coachella on their mobile app in December even though it has since been taken down. The Stone's front man Mick Jagger told Rolling Stone last week that he had no idea how the date got on the app and that he had not been approached by Goldenvoice (yet this could be a cover-up for the untimely mistake). Daft Punk has been a favorite of rumor-mills since they came to the Empire Polo Field in 2006. Yet Rob Da Bank the UK's Bestival organizer told eFestivals that he was told Daft Punk was definitely not touring in 2013 months ago. That leaves the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Phoenix who both have albums coming out this Spring. Lastly, the fact that the 66-year-old David Bowie released his first single after a decade long hiatus out of nowhere this week is reason for speculation. With an album titled The Next Day due out in March he is practically a shoe-in for the headliner spot... that is if we can get him to
the States Indio.
