We feel bad for Chris Martin.
First, he dropped an f-bomb on live television during a press conference about Coldplay's Super Bowl 50 halftime show. Then Coldplay's performance was brutally upstaged by Beyoncé's controversial Black Panther tribute. And after the show, Martin was ridiculed in unflattering screenshots, memes, and comparisons to the wayward Left Shark from last year's Super Bowl. Even members of the United States Congress are making jokes about Coldplay right now.
Despite the repercussions of being a famous musician in the age of the internet, Martin succeeded in being the most authentic Super Bowl 50 act. Coldplay's performance was a Lisa Frank sticker brought to life: the visuals were energetic, colorful and heart-warming. Martin didn't rely on a fancy costume, sex appeal, or a political statement to deliver his music. Instead, Martin focused on the energy of Coldplay's songs—y'know the actual music. And Martin was having the time of his life on stage because he wasn't trying to be a persona.
We're still wondering why Beyoncé (who performed at Super Bowl XLVII in 2013) and Bruno Mars (who performed at Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014) were there... again. Carlos Santana is fired up as well:
"I do feel compelled to point out to you that the Halftime Show should have included some of the local iconic bands that the World would have loved to see perform," Santana wrote in an open letter to the NFL and CBS. "Bands like Metallica, Steve Miller, Journey and yours truly. We would have rocked the Half Time Show and done the SF Bay Area proud. This is just an invitation for you to consider iconic bands as part of your Half Time entertainment. Real live music, real live vocals, and give the audience real live chills."
Coldplay's A Head Full of Dreams tour is benefiting from the exposure of the Halftime Show and ticket scalpers are cashing in on the resale value of their tickets.
