A Gallery Guide to Saturday's Grrl Fair!

Tuesday marked the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day, and this Saturday you can continue the celebration at the 10th annual Grrl Fair in Santa Ana. The Riot Grrrl-inspired music, art and education event featured in the pages of the current edition of the OC Weekly (out today) has grown in reputation. Hell, more bands were added–including Resist and Exist, My Machete and Taller Sur–after I had already turned in my article!

With workshops, performances and film screenings taking place inside the numerous galleries of the Santora Arts Building, attending Grrl Fair can seem like a daunting labyrinth to navigate. A “waterfall schedule” was how Grrl Fair collective member Adrienne Santellan explained it to me a few weeks ago. Luckily, the ladies have provided a gallery guide to Grrl Fair so that all interested parties can make their way through eight hours of feminist flavored festivities.

As you study the graphic to see what you want to hit up and when, here's a list of five musical performers not to be missed on Saturday!

1. Bella Novela

Interviewed as part of our Grrl Fair feature article, drummer Jannae McClure and singer/keyboardist Jackie Ojeda help power this energetic Long Beach-based trio.

Performing at the Basement Main Floor from 10:45 – 11:15 p.m.

2. Sunny War

The bluesy songstress returns to Grrl Fair this year as a solo performer after debuting in OC two years ago at the same event as part of the Anus Kings duo. Watch her claw hammer style work its way up and down the neck of her acoustic guitar plucking and strumming out sweet, sweet songs.

Performing at the Multi-Purpose Area from 7:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.

3. Spare Parts for Broken Hearts

All Grrl Grunge from Orange! Formed last year, Spare Parts for Broken Hearts is comprised of veterans of the scene. They look to release their first full length later this year.

Performing at Kalim's from 7:15 – 7:45 p.m.

4. Without the Blonde

Huntington Beach's Anna Tutor adds her indie-acoustic mellowness to the mix. She started off her interest in music by playing Bob Dylan songs on guitar while alternately listening to Billie Holiday.

Performing at the MCGallery from 7:00 – 7:30 p.m.

5. The Bellhaunts

If helping to organize and oversee Grrl Fair wasn't enough of a task, Adrienne Santellan will be performing with her band The Bellhaunts as well. Why not? It's been ten years of hard work putting together the showcase time after time.

Performing at Kalim's from 9 – 9:30 p.m.
