Ole’s Tavern is in San Clemente and named after the city’s founder, Ole Hansen. It’s one of the more mellow scenes in the bar-heavy city, with a good mix of local young men and women and older regulars who remember the days before the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant was erected, and the only radioactive thing in town was Richard Nixon over at La Casa Romantica. They’re most famous for all the pool tables they have. The art of billiards is essentially dead, relegated to Vietnamese and Mexican bars. But at Ole's Tavern, this is still the sport of choice while knocking back beers and flirting in a place where Marines on leave from Pendleton mingle with the outside world and wow you with tales of Afghanistan as they kick your ass off the corner pocket. Make sure to travel here with friends, though, just in case things get a bit wacky with a ringer or two.
