Started by a San Jose college student in 1971, Togo's is a "sandwich shack" proud of its freeform, West Coast heritage. In the 1980s, the company says, its employees were known for "prepping for lunch" and then playing Frisbee on the lawn. Over the years, Togo's has kept up with the nation's sandwich trends, adding wraps and toasted buns; today it's known for its Chicken Salad Daily Special and the colossal size of sandwiches like the Roast Beef and Swiss or the equally huge Turkey and Avocado. Salads and soups are also available, and most locations offer to-go desserts as well. More adventurous sandwich eaters will appreciate hummus as an offered spread, as well as Dutch Crunch bread, available for any sandwich and presumably compatible with Ultimate Frisbee.
