The Social List is a Spanish restaurant in Long Beach. If you happen to drive through Long Beach’s so-called Retro Row, a strip of Fourth Street between Junipero and Cherry, it will be as though the black-and-white movie you’re watching suddenly switches to Technicolor. The buildings are splashed with bright paints and clashing hues usually reserved for Oz. This hipster hub is home to vintage-clothing shops, a handful of eclectic restaurants and the Art Theatre. The Social List is one of the newest additions. And what sets it apart -- other than the Belgian beers and the communist propaganda posters -- are the toasts. These are bigger, more substantial versions of Basque pinxtos, in which any of number of things are set atop toasted bread. The best of these might just be the one with chicken-liver pate, which is tangier and more delectable than anything having to do with chicken liver has any business being.
