Before the frozen yogurt thing hit and the cupcake thing fizzled, there was the boba milk tea craze. At the forefront of the race was Tapioca Express, one of the more successful and popular boba joints around. Today, even as the fervor for sucking up starchy tapioca balls up an over-sized straw has subsided, the franchise still has at least a handful of shops in OC. At the center of each is a milk tea that actually doesn't much taste like tea, but rather a light chocolate milk with just the barest suggestion of teaness. The point isn't to please the tea snob but cater to the tween to twenty set that finds the taro milk tea comforting and the honeydew snow bubble refreshing. Every Tapioca Express also offers crispy chicken, morsels of battered hen fried and shaken with a spice mixture to a hotness level of your choosing. If you're between tween and twenty you should already know these are the natural accompaniment to their drinks.
