This restaurant/bar has a colorful history. The original Sam's, which opened its doors in 1933, was only a drinking establishment. Its white slat-board building was among the last to be bulldozed when the downtown area was renovated in the late '90s. But like the mighty Phoenix, Sam's has risen from the ashes. The new building's brick walls are lined with vintage license plates and old photos. The small bar features a full complement of liquors, with three beers on tap including Sam's Place Pale Ale. A pint is a little on the pricey side at $5.50 but is every bit as full-flavored as a Sierra Nevada.
