In true OC style, the finest Vietnamese dining in Little Saigon is in a building that used to be a Bennigan's, outside the Target at the Westminster Mall. Inside, S (named for the shape of Vietnam) is quite elegant, the service is attentive and English-speaking, and the food is very well-prepared. This is where you take a first date; make sure to order a fish dish, as they are the kitchen's strong point. Ca ri ca (fish in coconut curry) is a winner; pair it with a light white wine or a selection from their tea menu. There is a separate, extensive vegetarian (mostly vegan) menu, for which you must ask. Vegetarian spring rolls (cha gio chay) are excellent, as is the vegetarian banana salad (goi hoa chuoi chay). Chay kho to, a vegetable stew in a clay pot with a thin, pepper-and-caramel sauce, is very good, but meat-eaters should try it with fish (ca kho to) or pork (thit heo kho to). Expensive, yes, but you're paying for service, presentation and ambiance, three things in short supply in the holes-in-the-wall of Little Saigon.
