Drive southbound on PCH from Newport to Laguna and you can't miss Ruby’s Crystal Cove Shake Shack. There's a turnout, a few parking spots, and when the weather is warm, a line of people. In the summer there will be tanned bodies and people in shorts, all out to enjoy the sun, the view, and an ice cream treat to make it all official. Crystal Cove Shake Shack was previously a family-run landmark until the Ruby's empire claimed it. They still do the same date shake though. And it’s what you should get. Dates are whirred to bits, blended into vanilla ice cream and milk. It's topped with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry, served with a long spoon to start you off because during the first few minutes, the drink is too thick for the straw. Since it’s packed full of dates, this is a shake you eat more than you drink. The fruit has the mouth feel of coarsely ground peanuts and amps the sweetness of the ice cream tenfold. By the last slurp, you will feel like you consumed two days worth of dairy fat and sugar. Other than the shakes, people get the hot dogs. Eaten with the view of the Pacific, they’re probably worth the tourist-trap prices.
