Restauration is a diner in Long Beach. It’s divided into two parts: a diner straight out of an Edward Hopper painting but with fluffy pillows, and an outdoor patio area shaded with sails and a wall of pots where they grow the herbs. And then there’s a wood-smoke oven, which owners Dana and Rob Robertson didn’t hide in the small kitchen, but installed outside in the open, looking unlike the sturdy concrete dome anchored into the foundation at Mozza’s, and more a precariously put-together art-school project made with two-by-fours and held up by stilts. You could come to Restauration at dinner time, when the strung-up lights lend a romantic mood and the same short ribs used for one of the most popular brunch dishes—the Whitson omelet—is cooked with kale, tomato sauce and a ricotta-rich gnocchi that squishes softly between your teeth before it melts. Or you could order a wood-fired pizza with more of the short ribs, a roasted peach and blue cheese. And for sharing around the table, there are lightly-battered white shrimp that are fried, then sprinkled with mint and sesame and served with half a lime and a spicy aioli. Also great: the seared Pacific albacore that comes in a puddle of gazpacho that can turn anything it touches into something delicious. But the best time to come is brunch. There will be gay couples, straight couples, hipsters, old fogeys—all engaging in the kind of brunch conversation and laughter that’s fueled by bottomless mimosas and the promise of a leisurely weekend afternoon doing exactly this.
