Don Don Tei may be the first donburi specialist in OC. They do nothing but comforting bowls of rice, topped with all manner of Japanese proteins and treats. The most toe-curling is their simplest, the oyako don, chicken meat simmered with beaten egg to form a singular soft disk that's slid onto a hot bed of rice. Though slightly more elaborate, the katsu don takes the same idea with the egg and replaces the chicken with cut planks of breaded pork cutlet. The most addictive, however, has to be the tempura don, where a trifecta of seafood (fish, shrimp and squid) are deep fried in light batter, joined by vegetables and a barely-there sauce. What results is a unified dish that has the crisply fried joined with the softly steamed, the two properties bridged by a common purpose: to make you happy and full.
