Coastline Community College Art Gallery

Coastline Community College Art Gallery is an art gallery in Newport Beach instead of the school’s location in Garden Grove or its old Huntington Beach location. Long the Gummo Marx of OC's community-college system, Coastline Community College is finally establishing itself thanks to the genius of David Michael Lee. An OC native and acclaimed artist in his own right, Lee took over this year and has already featured provocative exhibits, none better than "Cake/Fondant," a collection vaguely themed around cakes, its centerpiece a bunker in the shape of a cupcake. The current exhibit, "Commodores," features not only seafaring artifacts from the Bowers and Newport Harbor Nautical museums, but also modernistic takes on the ocean that don't bore like too much local art on the subject. The gallery is scheduled to move to bigger digs in Newport in November, so go while you can to its Surf City spot, be delighted, then follow them.
