Belacan Grill takes over the defunct Tropika, which at the time was the only Malaysian restaurant in OC. Now that it has, Belacan Grill has itself become the de facto Malaysian restaurant in OC. When you come, expect to be in the company of people who travelled for miles. A few will have driven from Redondo Beach, where it used to do business before moving the entire operation to Tustin. The gado-gado is served warm with a hearty peanut sauce that makes it more a full-on meal than a salad. The roti canai is light and buttery, tearing off in ragged pieces, ready to dipped in a bowl of curry. But these are mere appetizers. Get the nasi lemak, which is pretty much the national dish of Malaysia. On the plate you'll find a dome of coconut-flavored rice with all the required trimmings of rendang, sambal and a whole hard boiled egg--it's like a sampler plate of the chef's talents and the region's delights.
