It is doubtful you'll find anyone in line at the Bear Flag Fish Company buying actual fish. This second outlet of the Newport Beach seafood monger is located at tony Crystal Cove Promenade, and everyone who comes through its doors is either too rich to cook or too poor to eat out anywhere else in the plaza. Don't get us wrong: there are certainly a few fish specimens to buy; but the slabs of wild salmon, the halibut and nearly everything else behind the butcher's case is really just for show. What you're there for is the grilled blackened ahi laid atop steamed rice with a surprisingly snappy vegetable stir fry. Or some silken Hawaiian poke. Or an even better octopus poke with sweet strands of seaweed for crunch. Or a fruity cioppino way better than any you'll sip at San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. Heck, just admit that you'd rather eat your fish than cook it yourself. Then just order another pound of that lemony ceviche. It feels like your eating melting fish snow flakes. When your fish monger cooks your fish for you, can you still call him your fish monger?
