Werner Herzog Coming to Chapman U and You Can See Him for Free!

Legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog will appear at Chapman University during the week of free events leading up to the inauguration of the Orange university's new president, Daniele C. Struppa, it was announced Thursday.

“A Celebration of Creativity in the Arts–Featuring a Conversation with Iconic Filmmaker Werner Herzog” is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, in the Marybelle and Sebastian P. Musco Center for the Arts on campus.

Chapman theater professor Tamiko Washington conducts the onstage conversation with Struppa’s favorite movie director, whose resume includes Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Fitzcarraldo and Grizzly Man.

Long Beach and Orange County theaters are still showing Herzog's latest documentary, Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World, a meditative exploration of the Internet.

The Chapman event also spotlights artistic collaborations between university faculty in music, dance, theatre and literature, centered on L’Infinito (Infinity), a poem by Giacomo Leopardi that is cherished by many Italians and, in a special way, by Struppa.

It's but one of many free events that are open to the public in the week before Struppa's Sept. 30 Inuguration Ceremony in the Musco Center that are intended to reflect his many and varied interests, from science to film and poetry.

Other events will feature actor-singer Leslie Odom Jr. (from Broadway’s smash Hamilton), Google’s “Chief Evangelist” Gopi Kallayil, famed physicists Sir Roger Penrose, Paul Davies and Yakir Aharonov and noted literary critic Marjorie Parlor.

While the events with Herzog and the others are free, online reservations and tickets are required for entry. Get them at www.chapman.edu/inauguration.
