The Walking Dead Attraction to Open Fourth of July at Universal Studios

Universal Studios Hollywood announced Wednesday that its The Walking Dead attraction opens to the public on July 4.

The “living version of the show” will be housed in a custom-built complex just inside the theme park’s main entry.

“It’s very exciting to be able to make the attraction as 100 percent authentic as possible,” said Greg Nicotero, a director and executive producer on The Walking Dead.

John Murdy, the Universal Studios Hollywood creative director, said during recent “scare actor” auditions that his idea for the attraction was immediately blessed by Nicotero.

“Greg said, ‘I want to be part of it,'” Murdy recalls Nicotero saying during a phone call. “He’d always been a consultant, but now he really wanted to work for us. Now his team is part of our team. They are giving us actual [mask] molds from the show.”

“We’re getting the chance to utilize molds that were created specifically for the show and translate them into parts of the attraction,” confirms Nicotero, whose special effects company KNB Efx creates zombies for the cable TV show and theme park attraction.

“We’re creating animatronic walkers that guests will be able to see. It’s never been done before. It’s one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art, and I can’t wait.”
