Game Over, Man! [Special Screenings, Aug. 25-Sept. 1]

Citizen Soldier. It's the Orange County premiere of this feature about a group of soldiers in the Oklahoma National Guard's 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, known since World War II as the “Thunderbirds,” fighting in the most dangerous parts of Afghanistan at the height of the surge. Working Wardrobes, the Orange County nonprofit that collects clothing that the needy can wear to job interviews, will donate all ticket proceeds to VetNet, a scholarship program for military veterans. Hairspray. For the second year in a row, a LGBTQ Movie on the Beach heralds the near-arrival of the QFilm Festival in Long Beach. This free screening is John Waters' 1988 musical comedy focusing on overweight teen Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake) as she becomes the star of a popular teen dance show, then pushes for racial integration of the program. Tickled. When reporter David Farrier sets out to explore “competitive endurance tickling,” which has young men paid to be tied up and tickled, he receives a massive push back. Jaws. It's the Steven Spielberg popcorn movie that spawned many imitators and started blockbuster thinking inside Hollywood studios—screening, ironically enough, next to a beach that was recently visited by sharks. The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. Calle Cuatro's Sunday matinee is this 1953 musical fantasy that was the only film written by Theodor Seuss Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss). It's about a boy named Bart trying to stop his piano teacher, Dr. Terwilliker, from enslaving 500 young boys at his magnificent piano, where they would have to practice 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Royal Shakespeare Company: Shakespeare Live. Direct from the company's theater in Stratford-Upon-Avon, hosts David Tennant and Catherine Tate introduce performances from Benedict Cumberbatch, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Helen Mirren, Joseph Fiennes, and a bunch of other Brits and Yanks who have graced Graham Norton's couch. The Royal Ballet and the English National Opera also help mark the life and work of William Shakespeare on the 400th anniversary of the playwright's death. Aliens. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1986 science-fiction horror classic, Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas Laguna Niguel and SquaredCo Events team up to present the digitally remastered movie on the big screen and a film-themed pop-up art show in the lobby. Long Beach International Film Festival. Held in concert with the Long Beach Indie Film, Media & Music Conference and Expo at Long Beach Convention Center, the festival opens with a screening of South Bureau Homicide. Mark Earl Burman and Mike Cooley's documentary is about the bond between LAPD homicide detectives and neighborhood activists seeking an end to violent crimes in South Los Angeles.
