When a person is exposed to situations that induce fear or perceived inescapability, a complex system of brain-body responses are activated to support survival. While this multifaceted response to trauma is the subject of ongoing inquiry, recent studies on hormonal interactions, physiological responses, and trauma-specific memory offer new ways of understanding survivor behaviors and emotions that can otherwise seem counterintuitive or confusing. This discussion of trauma-related neurobiology will offer important information to support survivor healing, increase understanding and social support, and result in enhanced handling of cases involving interpersonal violence.
