Mission San Juan Capistrano announces the return of its Romance of the Mission benefit gala on Friday, September 15 on the grounds of historic Mission San Juan Capistrano. San Juan Capistrano residents and philanthropists Jim and Sheila Peterson will be honored for their ongoing support of Mission San Juan preservation efforts and Grammy and Tony Award winner Heather Headley is this year’s concert artist.

The Peterson’s have made a significant impact to numerous Mission preservation projects including Gate House Preservation, Sala Preservation, education programs, museum upgrades, new exhibit development and art & artifacts preservation.

“It is truly humbling for Sheila and me to be recognized as the 2017 Romance of the Mission honorees, as the Mission Preservation Foundation’s incredible accomplishments never cease to inspire us. We hope others will share our passion and support for the Mission San Juan Capistrano to continue its legacy of community service and education, as well as its efforts to preserve important artifacts and remain a unique part of Orange County’s history,” said Jim Peterson.

According to Billboard Magazine, “Heather Headley is among the top singers with a vocal that absolutely astounds with its intensity.” The Tony and Grammy award winner considers her multi-faceted career a blessing. Originally from the Caribbean island of Trinidad, Headley earned numerous accolades for her debut album This Is Who I Am and Grammy Award nominations for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. She released Audience of One in 2009 which won a Grammy for the Best Contemporary R&B Gospel album. She played Nala in the original Broadway cast of the Elton John and Tim Rice’s hit Tony winning musical The Lion King and in 2016 made a triumphant return to Broadway playing Shug Avery in “The Color Purple.”

Mission San Juan Executive Director Mechelle Lawrence Adams says, “We are so fortunate to have an artist of Heather Headley’s caliber to help us celebrate our wonderful friends Jim and Sheila Peterson at this year’s Romance of the Mission. The Mission’s annual gala stands to be one of the most striking yet and will generate much needed replenishment of preservation funds so that we can continue to steward this very special place. There is no doubt that this event will captivate all who attend while also generating care and investment in Orange County’s only mission. Our Mission Preservation Foundation, community partner The Ritz Carlton, Laguna Niguel and Mission staff look forward to hosting a magical evening of elegance and purpose.”

All proceeds from the benefit gala will be used to protect and preserve the historic fabric of the Mission San Juan Capistrano site and its going projects to sustain and improve the guest experience of over 300,000 annual visitors.

The evening begins at 6:00 p.m. with opening reception in the Mission’s Front Gardens followed by the concert, historic bell ringing and candlelight four-course plated dinner hosted by The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel in the Main Courtyard.

Mission San Juan Capistrano is located at 26801 Ortega Highway, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675. For tickets, underwriting opportunities or more information about the benefit gala, contact Barb Beier at 949.234.1323 or visit
