Writer-director Julia Ducournau’s feature film debut is a French horror drama that has invoked comparisons to David Cronenberg and picked up a wide swath of international awards from indie film festivals (including the critic’s week award at Cannes) – oh, and they hand out vomit bags at some screenings, which, after viewing the trailer, is clearly apropos. Telling the story of 16-year-old vegetarian Justine, who gets hazed at college and suddenly develops an appetite for human flesh, Raw is considered one of the most original and grotesque films of recent years, putting Ducournau firmly in the club of young women filmmakers like Ana Lily Amirpour and Jennifer Kent who are further burying the “chick flick” stereotype and gleefully dancing along the bloody razor’s edge.
