To light a candle? Or curse the darkness? Participating artists in the “Prayers, Protection and Resistance” exhibit choose to wield their craft in the name of illumination during tumultuous times. Co-curators Margaret Garcia and Nataasja Saint-Satyr first got together in Boyle Heights last year for “Prayers from LA.” The successful exhibit, inspired by Garcia’s own “Prayers…” series on intimate invocations for a better world, now comes to Fullerton’s Muckenthaler Cultural Center. More than 100 artists, including Jose Lozano, Frank Romero, Katherine England and Juliana Rico, respond to the toxic climates of division and prejudice through multimedia displays aimed to provoke hope in a troublesome world; one that seems beyond redemption more often than not.
