George A. Romero’s zombie classic gets a live spin at the Maverick Theater again this October – and if past reviews of the show are any indication, it’s a bone-a-fed winner. There’s just nothing like watching a group of square drama queens stuck in a house screaming while flesh eaters attempt to claw their way in for din-din. Speaking about the film years ago to the Weekly, the iconic Judith O’Dea (Barbara) recalled the grisly delight the cast enjoyed while feigning cannibalism: animal entrails dripping in chocolate syrup. She also noted that the experience didn’t put her off meat – or flesh. Regardless of how the Maverick bridges this on-stage fx, it’s still probably better to eat your supper early – and fill up on plenty of beverages to make it all go down.
