For over forty years, Chicano artist Luis Tapia has made a career out of building small scale sculptures depicting the Latino experience. His figures— either as stand alone statuettes or placed in diorama scenes— brandish a traditional Mexican folk art sculpture style while incorporating political and social commentary; perfect for reflecting the modern Chicano life and all its daily doldrums, no? A retrospective of the New Mexico artist “Cada Mente Es Un Mundo” ('Every Mind Is a World') will be on display at the Museum of Latin American Art, where you can see his colorful, emotive and humorous pieces evolve throughout the years, while consistently challenging the viewer to look deeper past the whimsical nature of each sculpture and consider the issues they try to dissect.
