Parenthood at any age is difficult. Parenthood when you are still a child yourself can be terrifying. Adding to that, what if you are homeless, in the foster care system, or coming from an abusive relationship? These are real situations happening to real teens in Orange County.

Directed by UCI Masters in Fine Arts Directing Candidate Melissa Livingston, who was a teen mom herself, “Life After Birth” is a community theatrical play that addresses head on this often overlooked taboo topic. Through the play, which Melissa wrote and directs, she intends to shed light on the subject of teen pregnancy and the stigma associated with it.

The play tells the stories of seven pregnant teens in Orange County in very different situations but all have one thing in common. They all find their way to Mary’s Shelter, a safe haven in Tustin for pregnant teens to find dignity, learn self-sufficiency and leave with restored hope. Mary’s Shelter offered each one an opportunity for change.
