Lynn Nottage's play started its life as a co-commissioned play between Baltimore's Center Stage Theater and Costa Mesa's South Coast Repertory and is loosely based on the life of her own great-grandmother. The story concerns a young, African American woman named Esther Mills in the early 20th century who moves to New York to kickstart her career as a seamstress. She is successful and much sought after by members of the elite as well as prostitutes who dwell around her small boarding house. As she saves her earnings for her own beauty parlor, she becomes pen pals with a stranger named George Armstrong, who promises the romance Esther is looking for. At every performance of Intimate Apparel, guests are encouraged to bring non-perishable foods like canned fruit, bagged rice or whole grain cereal to support FRESH Basic Needs Hub- SOAR, UCI's on-campus food pantry.
