In a time when the most fevered anti-fascist punk doomsayers have been proven right and then some, Providence’s Downtown Boys are the real deal—the kind of band that proves another world really is possible. They do lean mean Bad Brains/Circle Jerks circa 1980/81 hardcore (see “Traders” or “100% Inheritance Tax”) with blasting Deadbeats-style sax and the maximum-agitation energy of Nation of Ulysses, but with even deeper revolutionary grounding. They’ve recently signed to Sub Pop and are due for a sequel to their 2015 album Full Communism—Electrical Audio’s Greg Norman and Fugazi’s Guy Picciotto are already working with them—and given the opportunity they’d probably do the greatest cover of the Avengers’ “American In Me” ever.
