One of the 20th century's best known songwriters is Carole King, a songwriter so gifted with putting romantic poetry to music that she was the lyricist for some of American music's biggest pop songs on rotation in jukeboxes across the country. So it's fitting, then, that her story comes full circle as a Broadway musical called Beautiful. Beautiful chronicles the life of King when she was Carole Klein, an ambitious Brooklyn teenager whose drive led her to write songs for Aretha Franklin, the Animals, the Shirelles, the Monkees, and other '60s acts, some with her then-husband Gerry Goffin. Personal struggles and adversity would give way to a new chapter in King's career, becoming a legendary singer in her own right.
