  • Theatre Out

    Theatre Out

    402 W. 4th St. Santa Ana, CA 92701
714-220-7069 Theater Out is a theater in Santa Ana. OC's only theater devoted to stories that comment in some way on the LGBT experience has received short shrift in our pages. It's not by choice: There are only so many plays we can squeeze into our coverage, and simply due to timing (short theatrical runs, multiple plays to choose from, the cruel reality of deadlines), since forming in 2006, the Santa Ana-based Theatre Out has received only one full review in the Weekly. And that's a shame. While many of the plays have favored, in the words of literary director Darcy Hogan, "rich, interesting life stories over skin, sex and violence," there have been some quite striking choices, such as Angels In America, The Laramie Project, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. And how we couldn't squeeze in a review of a play called Southern Baptist Sissies is just unconscionable. Good stuff! More >>

  • The Wiltern

    The Wiltern

3790 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90010
213-388-1400 In a city of Art Deco landmarks, the Wiltern might be one of L.A.'s most striking architectural fixtures. Originally intended as a vaudeville theater when it opened in 1931, the venue has hosted film screenings, but in more recent years has been primarily a location for rock and pop concerts. Named after the intersection of Wilshire Blvd. and Western Ave., where it's located on the edge of Koreatown, the grand old building features classic furnishings, crystal lamps and ornate sun designs painted on the theater's large, high ceiling. A large balcony looks down over a ground floor, which alternates between seated and general-admission style standing room. Several full bars are scattered around the roomy environs, including in the sumptuously gilded lobby. The high ceiling sometimes makes for echoing sound when loud rock bands play the theater, but the acoustics are usually fine for quieter performers and theatrical events. Ray Davies, Cheap Trick, Radio Birdman, Buffalo Springfield, the Breeders and Dimmu Borgir are among the widely disparate musicians who've invaded the Wiltern's lavish stage. All ages, with street parking and a multistory lot next door. More >>

  • The Yost Theater

    The Yost Theater

307 N. Spurgeon St. Santa Ana, CA 92701
888-862-9573 The Yost Theater is a concert venue in Santa Ana. Housed in a vintage movie house, the Yost Theater is looking to compete with big OC music venues such as Disney's House of Blues. Gorgeously appointed with massive plush drapes, ornate lanterns, blue ceiling tiles and a state of the art sound system, there might be some nervous grumbling in the House of Mouse. They have a lot of EDM shows, but the occasional indie darling will sneak in—and even some Spanish-language stuff. Co-operated by former Koo's Cafe owner Dennis Lluy, The Yost serves a large selection of draft beers and features a full bar -- perfect for getting loose in front of the massive stage. We won’t talk about its historic role as the center of Latino life in Southern California and its subsequent thievery twice from the Latinos who loved it because it’s simply too painful—but now you know.
