    The Resort on Pelican Hill

22701 Pelican Hill Road S. Newport Beach, CA 92657
949-467-6800 The Resort at Pelican Hill is the Irvine Co.'s magnum opus of luxury in Newport Beach—a place purposely designed to give competitors like the St. Regis a run for their money and the rest of us a reason to work harder for ours. At Pelican Grill, its restaurant, expensive cars are lined up like trophies. Inside, there's a show kitchen worthy of Iron Chef America and a dining room populated with couture-wearing socialites. Out on the al fresco terrace, an elevated view of the shimmering Pacific makes you contemplate the world and your place in it. And, oh yeah, the food's good, too. The Newport Beach resort boasts two Tom Fazio-designed (and -revamped) courses—Ocean North and Ocean South—that have drawn comparisons to Pebble Beach because of their beauty and magnificent ocean views. Of the pair, the North Course is the more wide-open, less difficult and most scenic. There are spectacular ocean views from every tee on the 7,000-yard, par 71 course. And the land surrounding the course is not lined with the cottages you'll find at other world-class golf destinations. More >>

  • The Rinks - Westminster Ice

    The Rinks - Westminster Ice

13071 Springdale St. Westminster, CA 92683
714-248-9611 Westminster Ice is in Westminster. This goliath ice rink just east of the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Depot is a mecca for aspiring hockey players and figure skaters. And for the more adventuresome, there are weekly curling classes and pickup games. The rink, which opened in 2001, is a sister facility to Anaheim Ice, which is the practice rink for the Anaheim Ducks. (In fact, the pro-shop link on the Westminster facility homepage actually takes you to the Anaheim pro shop.) As with the Anaheim rink, you can rent skates here, but if you're in the market for your own stuff, the pro shop is well-stocked with a wide selection of hockey and figure-skating gear: sticks, helmets, protective pads—even those cute zebra-patterned blade protectors. The young staff is well-trained in fitting you or your kid with the right skates and will sharpen your blades while you wait. More >>

    San Clemente Golf Club

150 E. Avenida Magdalena San Clemente, CA 92672
949-361-8380 The San Clemente Golf Club is in San Clemente. Green fees at this 18-hole, Billy Bell-designed municipal golf course equal what you'd tip the bag boys at private or overpriced public clubs. And even the links for the upper-snothead set that hug the coast can't beat the "Pride of the Pacific" when it comes to stunningly beautiful ocean views. Set on land San Clemente founder Ole Hanson donated to the city in 1930, the course features challenging elevation changes and a Par 5 on the back nine that is among the goofiest encountered in Orange County. For those who desire actual exercise with their golf—imagine that!—you can walk the San Clemente course without getting the stink-eye from the starter. If you can produce proof that you reside in San Clemente, you'll get on the city-owned course for a ridonkulously low 18 bucks on weekdays and $25 on weekends and holidays (with the $50 purchase of an annual resident-discount card). It's almost worth buying a house down there just for the privilege—especially if it's one of the cute cottages that line many holes. More >>

    Santa Ana River Jetties

Seashore Drive, off Pacific Coast Highway Newport Beach, CA 92663

The Santa Ana River Jetties are where Newport Beach and Huntington Beach meet. There are OC beaches with better surfing, less pollution and more unspoiled beauty, but when you've got to hit the beach right now, there is no beating the Santa Ana River jetties. Unlike the state park on the Huntington Beach side of the river and its $10-per-space parking, you can usually find a free slot outside the residential area on the Newport Beach side. You'll also find more spaces on the sand for your towel, umbrella and cooler. Just a few blocks south of the river mouth that flushes out stinky mud, polluted water and ear infections whenever it rains is a great surfing spot known for consistently shaped waves that are best plied by watermen and waterwomen who know what they are doing. On the other side of Pacific Coast Highway from the beach are cafés, a motel, a tattoo shop, an Army/Navy store and the Frog House surf shop. More >>

  • Santa Anita Park

    Santa Anita Park

    285 W. Huntington Drive Arcadia, CA 91007
626-574-7223 It's all about the ponies at Santa Anita Race Track; just ask anyone at the Arcadia-based horse racing track. Spend a couple of hours there and you'll be poring over betting tips with your burger at Clocker's Corner café and looking over a jockey's shoulder at the stables to catch a glimpse of the day's Racing Form. The original 1907 track is still beautiful enough to hold the Breeders' Cup, a November highlight for racing fans set against the backdrop of palm trees and the San Gabriel Mountains. During the warm summer months, the infield plays host to the 626 Night Market, a recurring Asian food and crafts festival. But regardless of whether you're in those worn green stands or pressed into a box with friends, crumpled losing tickets on the ground, it's still all about the ponies. More >>
