  • Santa Ana River Jetties

    Santa Ana River Jetties

Seashore Drive, off Pacific Coast Highway Newport Beach, CA 92663

The Santa Ana River Jetties are where Newport Beach and Huntington Beach meet. There are OC beaches with better surfing, less pollution and more unspoiled beauty, but when you've got to hit the beach right now, there is no beating the Santa Ana River jetties. Unlike the state park on the Huntington Beach side of the river and its $10-per-space parking, you can usually find a free slot outside the residential area on the Newport Beach side. You'll also find more spaces on the sand for your towel, umbrella and cooler. Just a few blocks south of the river mouth that flushes out stinky mud, polluted water and ear infections whenever it rains is a great surfing spot known for consistently shaped waves that are best plied by watermen and waterwomen who know what they are doing. On the other side of Pacific Coast Highway from the beach are cafés, a motel, a tattoo shop, an Army/Navy store and the Frog House surf shop. More >>

    Santa Anita Park

    285 W. Huntington Drive Arcadia, CA 91007
    626-574-7223

http://www.santaanita.com It's all about the ponies at Santa Anita Race Track; just ask anyone at the Arcadia-based horse racing track. Spend a couple of hours there and you'll be poring over betting tips with your burger at Clocker's Corner café and looking over a jockey's shoulder at the stables to catch a glimpse of the day's Racing Form. The original 1907 track is still beautiful enough to hold the Breeders' Cup, a November highlight for racing fans set against the backdrop of palm trees and the San Gabriel Mountains. During the warm summer months, the infield plays host to the 626 Night Market, a recurring Asian food and crafts festival. But regardless of whether you're in those worn green stands or pressed into a box with friends, crumpled losing tickets on the ground, it's still all about the ponies. More >>

2970 Airway Ave. Costa Mesa, CA 92626
    714-437-5867

http://ocy.jumpskyhigh.com Sky High Sports is in Costa Mesa. A specially designed facility, one of the only locations of its kind on the West Coast, decked out with wall-to-wall trampolines and padding, Sky High Sports is the dream playground for every hyperactive kid (and adult). There are three arenas open for free bounce, twists, flips and other extreme sports every day of the week, but dodge ball is king. Here, the game has been re-defined with new conventions such as the "air attack" and the "bounce, twist and dodge" maneuver. Join in on a 15-versus-15 free-play game during the day, get a group of officemates to compete in the monthly tournaments, or rent a private court. If you're looking for a more mature crowd to compete against, avoid the daytime horde of teenage kids and birthday-party attendees. Tired of jumping? Cool down with some refreshments from the concession counter and hit some of the arcade games scattered around the arena. More >>

http://Squires Inn (4425150) Don't strut into the Squires Inn expecting Buckingham Palace: you might get a dart thrown at your neck. This place is for serious drinkers who want to enjoy a game of pool on one of three tables. The room is small and dimly lit, and seating choices are simple—grab a small table in the corner or belly up to the bar. Stiff drinks are served in the full bar and there's a small selection of beers in bottles and on draft—think Newcastle and Budweiser. More >>

As of June 1, 2013, the former Home Depot Center in Carson officially became the StubHub Center, a South Bay home for soccer, music and more. It's part of a larger push by ticketing giant StubHub to raise its brand profile. The 27,000-seat complex includes an 8,000-seat tennis court and a wooden velodrome, the banked cycling tracks of the kind found at the Olympics. The outdoor soccer-specific field, home to L.A.'s own Galaxy, is the largest in all of Major League Soccer, which is why you'll regularly find international friendlies against the likes of FC Barcelona or Manchester United played here. Other nights, you might find the Summer X Games or even the Warped Tour taking over the large parking lot. More >>

http://www.thesweatspotla.com If you ever "just need to dance it out," head to the Sweat Spot dance studio in Silver Lake. Run by choreographer Ryan Heffington, the small studio is a bare-bones love letter to movement. There are no motivational posters on the white walls, just pounding rhythms and Heffington's sharp instructions cutting through the noise. Drop-in classes, like the perennially popular Sweaty Sundays, offer the rhythmically challenged a chance to learn a few moves and shed some pounds, while more targeted classes like Rock 'N' Roll Ballet cater to a smaller crowd. But with prices set less than $15 for any individual class, there's little reason not to try them all. More >>
