Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall

    714-556-2787

http://www.scfta.org The Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall is a performing arts venue in Costa Mesa. The 2,000-seat hall, an estimated $240 million expansion of the Orange County Performing Arts Center, is a delirium-inducing cocktail of scale, architecture and acoustics. The three-tiered hall, which opened last year, was designed with aural pleasure in mind. It boasts an acoustic canopy, reverberation chambers and sound-sponging curtains to deaden certain frequencies from loudspeakers, when they are used. This world-class venue has already hosted renowned entertainers such as Placido Domingo and the American Ballet Theater, and it will likely continue to draw some of the most famous icons of highbrow entertainment for years to come. It’s also the home of the Pacific Symphony run by Carl St. Clair, and always brings in other big orchestras. We’re still waiting, though, for them to restage all of Beethoven’s symphonies the way they did years ago, you know? More >>

    714-541-8314

http://www.saintjosephballet.org St. Joseph Ballet Academy is in Santa Ana. Since 1983, it has been turning its mostly underprivileged 400 annual enrollees—ages 8 through high school—on to dance. Many have gone on to pursue careers in the highly competitive field. But less publicized are the academy's services that have nothing to do with ballon, cabrioles or èpaulement. Free academic help, including college-prep testing, is offered to all students, who arrive each afternoon at 3:30, after their regular classes. As a result, since 2005, every St. Joseph student has not only graduated from local high schools, but has also moved on to college coursework. California Institute of the Arts, Northern Arizona University and UCLA are among the institutions that this fall welcomed freshmen who had been members of the St. Joseph class of '09. Most had received academic scholarships, with Jessica Camacho leading the pack with her full-ride to wonderful Wellesley. More >>

David Bowie found stateside success at a crucial concert here in the early 1970s. The Clash made their Southern California debut at the Civic, and other musicians who've played its wide stage include Bo Diddley, Motorhead, the Descendents, Tex & the Horseheads, X, the Plasmatics, Iggy Pop, Gang of Four, Ian Hunter, Aerosmith and occasional Dogtown regular Bob Dylan. For much of the 1960s, the Civic was also home to the Academy Awards. The venue continues to be the site of all manner of activity, including fashion and trade shows, as well as live concerts. The venue's dance floor features a unique hydraulic floor that makes it easy to transform the room from a concert hall into an exhibit space. More >>

Though these up-and-coming comedians are just getting their feet onstage, the Secret City Comics Society (SCCS) still puts out a thoroughly entertaining show with a mixture of acts and games. Based in Fullerton, SCCS was founded by Alan Ng, a National Comedy Theatre performer with 15 years of experience. Feel free to take your family along for a creative night out, as SCCS boasts "a clean performance" for people of all ages. The act is divided into two groups: heroes vs. villains, with both taking suggestions and directions from the audience. Secret City keeps themes consistent, and the audience gets to decide on a winner. The group also teaches improv and hosts shows at local high schools. Performances are Friday and Saturday nights, with tickets a bargain at $12. All that’s needed is for one of them to become a YouTube star, and its future is secured. More >>

  • Segerstrom Center for the Arts

    Segerstrom Center for the Arts

600 Town Center Drive Costa Mesa, CA 92626
    714-556-2787

http://www.scfta.org Segerstrom Center for the Arts is unique as both an acclaimed arts institution and as a multi-disciplinary cultural campus. To put it bluntly, it’s the classiest venue in the whole damn county. Previously called the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Segerstrom Center traces its roots back to the late 1960s, when a dedicated group of community leaders decided Orange County should have its own world-class performing-arts venue that brings in national ballet and theater companies. In addition to the 3,000-seat Segerstrom Hall and intimate 250-seat Founders Hall, which opened in 1986, and the 1,704-seat Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall (opened in 2006) also houses the 500-seat Samueli Theater, the Lawrence and Kristina Dodge Education Center’s studio performance space and Boeing Education Lab. Home to newer institutions like the Off Center Festival that manage to bring in the coveted 25 and under crowd, the center has come a long way toward making this upscale culture palace a place for everyone to enjoy.
