  • South Coast Repertory

    South Coast Repertory

655 Town Center Drive Costa Mesa, CA 92626
714-708-5555 South Coast Repertory is a theater in Costa Mesa, across the street from South Coast Plaza but nowhere near the same atmosphere or mindset. The best theater in OC, hands down. Provocative shows like the multi-layered conflict between Midwestern creationism and bicoastal liberal science in How the World Began and the profanity-laden Elemeno Pea really are a nice counter to the high-brow, sophisticated setting of the South Coast Rep. It would be super easy for SCR to play it safe and be totally vanilla, but they don’t, and we love them for it. It's also really affordable for students. Between $5 drinks, and free parking across the bridge at South Coast Plaza (don't be lazy), its mind blowing that a night out with professional live theater can be cheaper than a boring movie date. One of the greatest regional theaters in the United States, and always cognizant of reaching out to all of Orange County, not just the blue hairs. More >>

  • Trepany House at the Steve Allen Theater

Trepany House at the Steve Allen Theater

4773 Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90027
323-666-4268 Tucked into Los Feliz's Center for Inquiry-West, the Trepany House at the Steve Allen Theater is an intimate performing venue that presents a wide array of concerts, plays, vaudeville and comedy. When the theater first began putting on shows, it focused on comedians like Dana Gould, Emo Philips, Mary Lynn Rajskub and Kids in the Hall, as well as theatrical productions and esoteric philosophical and metaphysical explorations by everyone from NASA scientists to members of the Church of Satan. Before long, the theater also brought in live musicians, including the daft ragtime diva Janet Klein, Lavender Diamond and the charming pop duo the Ditty Bops mingling with harder-edged sounds from Rancid and Dethklok. Added to the mix is the center's ongoing fascination with horror and film culture, with presentations and screenings by the likes of Toby Hooper, Joe Dante, David Cronenberg, Miranda July and James Franco. In homage to its namesake inspiration, the late comedian Steve Allen, the theater is an unusual nexus point of scientific curiosity and vaudevillian variety. More >>

  • The Swallow

    The Swallow's Inn

31786 Camino Capistrano San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675
949-493-3188 The Swallow's Inn, located near the Mission San Juan Capistrano, represents a bit of an anomaly in Orange County. There aren't many honky-tonks in the area, but if you're going to check out such a watering hole in the land of citrus, the Swallow's Inn is worth the drive. Small, with dark wooden tables and high chairs, it's not uncommon to see cowboy boots, big buckles and Stetson hats crowding the dance floor. The Swallow's boasts a full bar, as well as a nice selection of bottled beers and eight brews on tap. Yet what makes the Swallow's Inn special isn't the booze; it's the live entertainment occurring almost every night. The small stage hosts a bevy of up-and-coming national and local country acts. Even if you consider yourself less than a fan of country, we defy you stay off the dance floor--especially after you've had a couple of beers and a shot of Jack Daniel's. More >>
