  • Aria International Supermarket

    Aria International Supermarket

2505 El Camino Real Tustin, CA 92782

Aria International Supermarket is huge--airplane hangar huge. Even after the market moved into the space previously occupied by Sears Home Essentials, there is still literally enough space for a fleet of Escalades that could all fit between the aisles. The produce selection is eclectic and seasonal, as it should be. You are just as likely to find Boar's Head meat in your sandwich as you are a great deal on a rice and koobideh meal. The former is served at a full service deli that boasts more cheeses than at the Trader Joe's. The latter is served at a food court that might as well be three football fields away at the opposite corner of the store. In between you'll find peach nectar from the Middle East, tofu from Japan, and marscapone from Wisconsin--and it's all here, in quiet, unassuming Tustin. More >>

  • H Mart

2600 Alton Pkwy Irvine, CA 92606
    949-833-0111

http://hmart.com If you're a Korean supermarket entrepreneur, look no further than HMart in Irvine to see how it's done. This compact little supermarket in what is perhaps the busiest shopping center in Irvine is the shining example of how to run a Korean grocery. The vegetables alone prove that it's the supermarket you want to go to: they're cheap and farm fresh, two previously mutually exclusive things. The fish department is immaculate, not smelling of actual fish. If you want to cook Korean BBQ at home, shabu shabu, or a stew, this is the place to get your ingredients. Some of it is already chopped, packed and ready for the pot. If you'd rather not cook at all, there's the small but essential food court, with two of the best Korean food vendors in the city. • Mercado Corona

25351 Alicia Pkwy. Laguna Hills, CA 92653
    949-581-8365

http://www.mercadocorona.com Mercado Corona is a market in Laguna Hills. At first, the tiny storefront resembles the dozen or so small Mexican markets that thrive in South County, from the money-transfer booth near the aguas frescas to the bottles of Tapatío on all the tables in the dining room to the menu above the counter: quick-service Mexican standards such as chilaquiles, tacos, tortas and burritos. But once it’s your turn to order, you start seeing hints of another reality. Next to the soda fountain are papers advertising Argentine empanadas. Colombian candies. Brazilian health supplements. Then you hear the lilting Argentine Spanish emerging from the meat counter and take a glance at the aisles, each devoted to a Latin American country, each groaning with goodies. More >>

    Mother's Market

24165 Paseo de Valencia Mission Viejo, CA 92653
    949-768-6667

http://www.mothersmarket.com This organic mini-chain is an Orange County institution, a place that, along with the Gypsy Den, hipped up vegetarian eating in Orange County years ago. They offer an extensive breakfast-through-dinner menu, but always constant is the remarkable soyrizo-chopped up with onions, tomatoes and a bit of salsa instead of prepared in greasy, crispy cylinders hours after being removed from a pig. And theirs is lean, hearty and even a bit spicy, and all-vegan. More >>

    Mother's Market & Kitchen

1890 Newport Blvd. Costa Mesa, CA 92627
    949-631-4741

http://www.mothersmarket.com Those uninitiated to the Mother's Market vernacular will find the menu's glossary helpful. There are definitions for terms such as TVP (textured vegetable protein), soyrizo (a soy-based version of the spicy Spanish sausage) and seitan (whole-wheat protein). Asterisks indicate something is organic. A heart icon means a dish is vegan. You won't need to refer to it, however, when you read the restaurant's roster of all-day breakfast dishes. Here, fried eggs, omelets and roasted potatoes are featured on plates that could pass muster at a real meat-eater's diner. The salsa that comes with the huevos rancheros could burn a hole through the plate. And even covered in non-dairy gravy, the biscuits for the country breakfast would satisfy a long-haul trucker from the South. For lunch, we would argue that no greater tuna melt exists outside these walls. More >>
