  • The Butterfly Lounge

    The Butterfly Lounge

    719 W. 19th St. Costa Mesa, CA 92627
949-642-2243 Located in a Costa Mesa industrial park that also houses Jugos Acapulco and Gloria's Mexican Food, Butterfly Lounge is California’s first size-acceptance club, and still one of the precious few around in Southern California. Mainly, it's a BBW (Big Beautiful Woman) club, but the less-Rubenesque are welcome, too. There isn’t much in terms of food other than eye candy, but the drinks are great and the women get much love from all the people who go—and there are many people who go. On any Saturday night, you'll find several big-bootied honeys gyrating on the small, wooden dance floor. On one visit, when the DJ switched from Naughty By Nature's "O.P.P." to Gwen Stefani's "Harajuku Girls," streamers and balloons filled the club. Each Saturday, there's an ass-shaking contest. Whether you're a BBW, a chubby chaser or a scrawny Sally, the $10 cover charge is well worth the good music, fun atmosphere and lively partiers. More >>

  • Club Ember

    Club Ember

    401 N. Anaheim Blvd. Anaheim, CA 92805
714-991-3686 An oasis of visually appealing modern design in the midst of a seemingly random automotive district in Anaheim. On the up-side, Ember Cafe & Music Club supplies a classy atmosphere with ample room to move on the dance floor. The down-side is the usual $20 cover fee usually reserved for Los Angeles clubs and the mandatory valet parking at the door. If you managed to cope with those two buzz kills, this club offers a sleek environment with relatively cheap drinks where you can comfortable kick back with a gang of friends and dance the night away. In Cahoots/Club Rio

    1401 S. Lemon Fullerton, CA 92832
714-525-9700 Step in line at In Cahoots, a country music joint where the dance floor comes alive nightly. The bar is 21 and over, but the crowd is all ages. The DJ offers an eclectic musical selection and the sizable dance floor never empties. Kick back a $4 bottled beer during line changes at either of the two bars or sip some Jack Daniels from the full bar. Plenty of the patrons are regulars, but the bartenders are equally attentive to newcomers. More >>

  • Sutra

1870 Harbor Blvd. Costa Mesa, CA 92627
949-722-7103 On weekend nights, Sutra is a typical club scene of hot bods rubbing to thumping beats, bathed with strobe lights, and soaked in booze. But there's another face to the restaurant-a quieter, more intimate side for those more interested in cuddling up with their honey, and less in picking up a new one. Feed each other things creatively cooked. Sip drinks immaculately mixed. Enjoy the romance. Thank us later. More >>

4647 Macarthur Blvd. Newport Beach, CA 92660

  • Tuscany Club

    Tuscany Club

    100 N. Harbor Blvd. Fullerton, CA 92832
714-451-0017 Though their pool room only sports one table, the Tuscany Club still manages to infuse the old-timey charm of a pool hall into its modern digs. The room is appointed with beautiful oak accouterments and elaborately filigreed chandeliers. This building features a large, concrete-floored space with a full bar, karaoke stage and dance area, and a smaller room featuring the aforementioned pool table and a liquor bar. Drinks include a large selection of wines in addition to a specialty martini list. There's also a small selection of beers on tap, including Stella Artois and Miller Lite. More >>

  • VLVT Velvet Lounge

    VLVT Velvet Lounge

416 W. Fourth St. Santa Ana, CA 92701
714-664-0663 VLVT Lounge is in downtown Santa Ana, and already hopping. Gay bars are still few and infuriatingly far between, so VLVT Velvet Lounge is already a beloved staple in LGBTQIOC, not just for its many themed nights, but also for its Sunday brunch. Among a sea of bottomless mimosas, a DIY Bloody Mary table and fresh-to-order omelets stand the Brunchettes, who trot out the sequins, wigs and torch songs as though they were lip-synching for their lives. Their popularity is such that VLVT schedules them for two shows—at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.—and highly recommends reservations. And every Sunday, VLVT Velvet Lounge is also home to Cherry, which touts itself as "OC's Sexiest Girls' Night." The layout of the bar definitely lends itself to that title—flashy nightclub feel with lots of space to dance, a huge patio area, an interactive text-flirting system and strong drinks that make up for the damage done to your wallet. • World Khan Nightclub

    222 W. Houston Ave. Fullerton, CA 92832

  • Xalos Bar

    Xalos Bar

    1160 N. Kraemer Blvd. Anaheim, CA 92806
714-632-0390 If Xalos Bar were a character from a play, it would be Blanche Dubois from Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire. The venue definitely looks better at night with assistance from some innovative lighting. Variously colored walls and a thatch-roof taco stand work to create a festive atmosphere, but might throw off clubbers expecting classier decor. The crowd is predominantly local and gets rather dense on weekends after 10 p.m. Xalos is equipped with a full bar and although the tenders might not keep on top of their specials, they can certainly whip up a decent classic.
