Community Cinema: The New Black

Director Yoruba Richen told Gawker that she first started planning the film that would become The New Black on the night that Obama won his first term and Prop 8 passed in California—a crystallizing moment that, six years later, became her documentary on African-American organizations campaigning for and against marriage equality in a 2012 Maryland election. The New Black reveals further complexities within an already complex intersection of issues, connecting race and religion to community and history, and managing that balancing act between personal perspective and journalistic discipline. It’s a difficult film, but in the best way—illuminating in the truest sense.
