The place used to be a ramen-only shop before this incarnation took over. 17 Cafe Ramen seems duty-bound to serve ramen, but that's not its real strong suit. This is, in fact, a Taiwanese-owned restaurant, serving pseudo-Japanese bento boxes that are really Taiwanese rice plates. The best has tender, thin sliced beef or pork sauteed and wok-tossed with a black pepper gravy thickened with corn starch--a very Taiwanese technique that gives the place away more as not just a ramen place than the trendy boba drinks do. http://www.class302.com You’re sitting in a wooden school desk. There’s a cubbyhole for stowing your books and an indentation carved at the top so that your pencil doesn’t roll off the edge. Above you, on a large green chalkboard are scribbled Mandarin characters and cartoons. Bright construction-paper posters and various kiddie-toy bric-a-brac are stapled to the walls. Your server wears knee-high black stockings, a pleated skirt and a green schoolgirl uniform. The meal she just dropped off is in an honest-to-goodness lunch tin. You are in Class 302, the first Orange County sequel of the hit Rowland Heights eatery that has stumbled into a previously untapped market: people who have fond memories of their Taiwanese grade-school experience and want to relive it in a restaurant. http://www.coffeebean.com Founded in Brentwood, California in 1963, the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is a true coffee and tea joint that focuses on hot drinks and not on sweets and pastries. Nonfat and soy-derived flavors are emphasized, signature decafs like Tropical Passion and Swedish Berries are brewed daily, and this may be the only place in Orange County where one can order a Strawberries and Cream Tea Latte straight off the daily menu, which is filled with the usual chocolate- and caramel-infused teas and coffees besides. The company brags about its close relationships with private farms and plantations, and after five decades of growth is the nation's largest privately held specialty coffee and tea retailer. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is easy to find on Voice Places. More >>
You need to try the tofu and thousand-year-old egg. Together they form pidan doufu, as classic a combination as PB and J, but way better than that. It's served chilled, so it's cooling, almost spine-tinglingly so. It's also refreshing, the kind of snack that you want during a heat wave. Or order the wonderful fried pork chop rice, where the rice is sprinkled with soy-stewed pork and the pork chop is thin and crisp. Whatever you do, do not incorrectly assume I-Tea is just a boba tea joint, because it isn't just that--it is one of the best and most consistent home-style Taiwanese restaurants in Irvine. More >>
There are donut shops all over this great land. Crullers, cake, plain and jelly-filled: Janny's does it all well and for pittance. The oil they use seems fresher than other lesser fried dough purveyors, and thus results in a cleaner tasting donut. Their greatest contribution to breakfast, however, remains their ham and cheese croissant, a flaky thing of cured pork bliss--just the kind of thing you'll regret eating this early in the morning but so filling you'll probably want to skip lunch. We've had fast food burgers and tacos up the yin-yang for years. Only now are we seeing the advent of its antidote: the salad. There are now more salad-serving upstarts to count. SaladRepublic is one of the newer ones and it, too, has franchise dreams like the rest of them. Salad Republic's salads are formidable, meant to be as filling as standalone meals. In the ahi salad, the greens are practically blotted out by the thick slab of the fish steak, which is grilled just to singe the outer surface. A halved avocado provides richness, a fistful of wonton strips crunch and when you finish the meal, you walk away thinking you've done a service to your diet. They also offer Greek yogurt in bins drizzled with all sorts of fruit and sweetness. And don't pass up their soups--hearty things delicious enough to warrant a soup franchise of their own. More >>
http://www.starbucks.com Since its founding by a trio of aspiring coffee roasters in Seattle in 1971, Starbucks has grown to become the largest coffeehouse in the world, with upwards of 20,000 locations in Orange County and around the world. Named for the chief mate on the whaling ship from Moby Dick, the company didn't begin chasing the Great White Whale of world java domination until the 1990s, by which time it was opening a new store every day. A turbulent economy has since forced it to retrench, but the chain remains a powerhouse both commercially and politically, thanks to its op-ed-penning chairman, Howard Schultz. A purveyor of whole foods, Starbucks typically farms out its secret recipes to a single, Starbucks-owned bakery in each city, and now sells a good deal of its coffee beans at grocery stores.
