  • Paul

    Paul's Coffee Shop

16947 Bushard St. Fountain Valley, CA 92708
    714-965-3643

http://www.semperfinerdiner.com The menu is small and doesn't really vary from omelets, hamburgers, pancakes and waffles. But surprises lurk in the specials board-Korean barbecue with kimchi, a linguiƧa-and-eggs breakfast (note to readers: Whenever a restaurant serves this Portuguese sausage, it's a keeper), and a wonderful Hawaiian omelet that's fat with ham and pineapple. And then there's the chicken-fried chicken, a caloric wonder covered with gravy and heart attacks. More >>

  • Polly

    Polly's Gourmet Coffee

    4606 E. 2nd St. Long Beach, CA 90803
    562-433-2996

http://www.pollys.com Polly's Coffee is a slice of Northern Europe plunked down into the set of Prairie Home Companion, by way of Vermont. This place doesn't fool around when it comes to a cuppa java. The woody, homespun interior features an imported German Probat LNIS coffee roaster, which can roast up to 30 pounds of beans at a time. Polly's also has comfortable make-yourself-at-home seating - including a semi-enclosed outdoor area - and the staff are friendly and accommodating. If you're in Long Beach and want a vibe that's sorta Larchmont-meets-Montana Avenue-meets-Sherman-Oaks, look for Polly's at the west end of 2nd Street's busy, fun retail/food strip. You'll feel right at home - assuming "home" is a small town in Northern Wisconsin. More >>

  • Salad Republic

    Salad Republic

4237 Campus Drive Irvine, CA 92612
    949-387-5482

We've had fast food burgers and tacos up the yin-yang for years. Only now are we seeing the advent of its antidote: the salad. There are now more salad-serving upstarts to count. SaladRepublic is one of the newer ones and it, too, has franchise dreams like the rest of them. Salad Republic's salads are formidable, meant to be as filling as standalone meals. In the ahi salad, the greens are practically blotted out by the thick slab of the fish steak, which is grilled just to singe the outer surface. A halved avocado provides richness, a fistful of wonton strips crunch and when you finish the meal, you walk away thinking you've done a service to your diet. They also offer Greek yogurt in bins drizzled with all sorts of fruit and sweetness. And don't pass up their soups--hearty things delicious enough to warrant a soup franchise of their own. More >>
