  • Mini Cafe

17870 Newhope St. Fountain Valley, CA 92708

  • MJ Cafe Express

4535 Campus Drive Irvine, CA 92612

MJ Cafe Express is built to be a college student hangout. It has tables that glow, booths that you can practically take a nap in, and cheap food that most of UCI's largely Asian student body would consider comfort food. The popcorn chicken can be had as a snack, eaten by spearing with a wooden skewer or with rice as a full meal. There's noodles, and more advanced plates involving soy-sauce cooked meats, but really you're here for the milk slushies with boba, egg pudding, a lot of it flavored with syrups and brown sugar sauce, which is like crack in its addictive qualities. Pay with cash and you get a discount. More >>

  • Orange Cafe

    1608 E. Mayfair Ave. Orange, CA 92867

Orange Cafe is a breakfast place in Orange. The menu is just a couple of pages, all featuring the tried-and-true: pancakes, omelets, ham, sausage—but no waffles, bizarrely enough. Lunchtime brings burgers and sandwiches; there is no dinner. Yet in this decidedly prole environment, the chefs do stab at creativity. Fluffy pancakes come stuffed with strawberries and vanilla cream. The Denver potato pancakes are Rocky Mountains of latkes, ham, sour cream and bell peppers; slit your over-easy eggs over them, and the umami factor explodes to a trillion. More >>

  • Paninoteca Maggio

195 E. City Pl Drive Santa Ana, CA 92705
714-426-8095 Paninoteca Maggio’s espresso, derived from a gargantuan machine out of out of a steampunk novel, but it’s more than a donkey kick to the senses: Maggio’s espresso is creamy, earthy, just slightly bitter, a liquid live wire that rivals Portola and Keán for the best espresso in Orange County. The namesake paninis are a small list that makes up for lack of choices with flavors that play off each other with the ease of a Puccini libretto. An Amalfi features salty prosciutto, musky mozzarella, biting arugula, and the tang of pesto, balsamic, and tomatoes; the Toscana’s slow-roasted porchetta radiates with garlic; a meatball sandwich is so fluffy, so juicy, that you want to barge into the kitchen to see if Barshishat’s nona is there making everything. 16947 Bushard St. Fountain Valley, CA 92708
714-965-3643 The menu is small and doesn't really vary from omelets, hamburgers, pancakes and waffles. But surprises lurk in the specials board-Korean barbecue with kimchi, a linguiça-and-eggs breakfast (note to readers: Whenever a restaurant serves this Portuguese sausage, it's a keeper), and a wonderful Hawaiian omelet that's fat with ham and pineapple. And then there's the chicken-fried chicken, a caloric wonder covered with gravy and heart attacks. More >>

    Polly's Gourmet Coffee

    4606 E. 2nd St. Long Beach, CA 90803
562-433-2996 Polly's Coffee is a slice of Northern Europe plunked down into the set of Prairie Home Companion, by way of Vermont. This place doesn't fool around when it comes to a cuppa java. The woody, homespun interior features an imported German Probat LNIS coffee roaster, which can roast up to 30 pounds of beans at a time. Polly's also has comfortable make-yourself-at-home seating - including a semi-enclosed outdoor area - and the staff are friendly and accommodating. If you're in Long Beach and want a vibe that's sorta Larchmont-meets-Montana Avenue-meets-Sherman-Oaks, look for Polly's at the west end of 2nd Street's busy, fun retail/food strip. You'll feel right at home - assuming "home" is a small town in Northern Wisconsin. More >>

  • Salad Republic

    Salad Republic

4237 Campus Drive Irvine, CA 92612

We've had fast food burgers and tacos up the yin-yang for years. Only now are we seeing the advent of its antidote: the salad. There are now more salad-serving upstarts to count. SaladRepublic is one of the newer ones and it, too, has franchise dreams like the rest of them. Salad Republic's salads are formidable, meant to be as filling as standalone meals. In the ahi salad, the greens are practically blotted out by the thick slab of the fish steak, which is grilled just to singe the outer surface. A halved avocado provides richness, a fistful of wonton strips crunch and when you finish the meal, you walk away thinking you've done a service to your diet. They also offer Greek yogurt in bins drizzled with all sorts of fruit and sweetness. And don't pass up their soups--hearty things delicious enough to warrant a soup franchise of their own. More >>
