  • 2J

    2J's Cocktail Lounge

    120 W. Houston Ave. Fullerton, CA 92832
    714-871-9665

http://www.myspace.com/houstonst Part sports bar, part lounge, 2J's refers to itself as "the swankiest dive in OC." At first blush, the crimson lighting, mini chandeliers and candlelight seem at odds with the pool tables, dartboard, and football paraphernalia. But, somehow, it all combines to make for a unique place to have a drink. Take up a post in one of the plush booths while drinking a very cold one (the bottles literally have frost on them) or grab a cocktail from the full bar. The Jukebox rocks a good mix of classic and modern rock— a good soundtrack for playing a game of pool on one of three tables. Nightly entertainment varies from DJs to rock bands. 1641 N. Placentia Ave. Fullerton, CA 92831
    714-577-8627

http://www.myspace.com/alebrijeDiscotheque Not to be confused with the vibrantly pink truck parked outside a Santa Ana supermarket, this dance and live-music club specializes in banda and rock en español; the "grill" part of the name refers mostly to the appetizers provided with bottle service. 714-879-0108

http://www.myspace.com/arturoscantinagrill Arturo's Cantina may be a little sparse on the draft beers (they have none), but this doesn't mean they're not keen on bringing the party. Between Thursday and Sunday nights, the venue is transformed into a thriving nightclub, complete with live entertainment. The bar serves a respectable offering of cocktails and plenty of bottled beers: Labels include Negra Modelo, Miller Light Lime, and Newcastle. The large Spanish-style building is fitted with a massive dance floor accommodating plenty of pretty people. Mix in strong drinks and good times are in the cards. • Big

    Big's Grill

323 N. State College Blvd. Fullerton, CA 92831
    714-526-4950

http://www.bigsgrill.com Since it traded its cramped digs on Kramer for a cavernous space on State College, Big's Grill now feels like it's got room to breathe-and to offer lots of fun distractions. The bar area is located on an elevated carpeted floor with wood-paneled walls and bookshelves, which lend the joint a library vibe (perfect for thirsty Cal State Fullerton students down the road). This room features a pool table along with golf video game Golden Tee, several tables and pretty cocktail waitresses slinging suds. The bar serves a large selection of craft beers including Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Stone IPA, and Fat Tire. The lower floor, which sports a dance area, is where karaoke magic happens and the requisite tipsy slow dancing commences. Every day, the bar features specials on drinks, including its "Ditch Work" deal, which offers half off all beers from 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. So get there early and greet the day with a pint. • Brian

    Brian's Beer & Billiards

    1944 N. Placentia Ave. Fullerton, CA 92831
    714-993-1401

http://www.briansbeer.com If the Cal State Fullerton athletics department had an official bar, it would be Brian's. Titan jerseys share the walls with sports photos and memorabilia that include beer signs from the '50s. Dart boards and a pool table sit in a recessed portion of the room, with a shuffleboard table resting against a wall opposite the bar. Brian's is strictly a beer bar, with multiple draft and bottled offerings. Dollar beer night is every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to midnight. • Commonwealth Lounge

    Commonwealth Lounge

    112 E. Commonwealth Ave. Fullerton, CA 92832
    714-525-8888

http://www.commonwealthlounge.com This downtown spot has successfully separated itself from the herd of local sud-slingers with unique aesthetic flourishes. Remarkably, the bar itself is table high, and patrons are seated in cushy, broad-backed chairs. The recessed liquor shelves feature opaque surfaces through which constantly changing colors shine and the tin ceiling is embellished with stamped floral patterns. The bar staff mixes up a menagerie of martinis from classic to watermelon as well as other alcoholic concoctions. However, local beer lovers will be delighted to know the lounge serves a tasty micro-number from Placentia's The Bruery, a spicy summer ale called Trade Winds. DJs regularly spin salsa, soul and funk and include appearances from KCRW's own Jeremy Sole as well as resident DJ Bobby Soul. More known for its great music and beautifully lit lounge than its food, although one could imagine Sinatra eating here if he was into artisan flatbreads. • House of Eden

    House of Eden

    1189 E. Ash Ave. Fullerton, CA 92831
    714-447-0692

http://www.houseofeden.org A sign outside House of Eden, formerly Cali Girls, formerly Cherries, boasts that it's the best little topless bar in all So Cal-a bold statement that may elicit argument, but certainly a worthy destination for those who appreciate half-naked girls and stiff drinks. A $5 cover charge after 6 p.m. gets revelers access to a nice selection of draft and bottle beers, including Shock Top, Budweiser, Hefeweizen, Blue Moon and Dos Equis, as well as a decent selection of liquors. The girls here are friendly without the relentless hustling for cash sometimes found at other such venues. Large booths in the back of the bar allow for semi-private dances when not too crowded. Live music shows up on Thursdays and Sundays, and the bar can be reserved for private parties. With an interior that looks, in fact, like the inside of an old galleon and a bartender with an authentic Irish accent, this establishment is a favorite haunt for British expats and Anglophiles alike. • The Pint House

    The Pint House

    136 W. Wilshire Ave. Fullerton, CA 92832
    714-525-7468

http://www.thepinthouse.com In the evolutionary time line of bars, the Pint House blazes its own path. It calls itself "an upscale American-style pub and restaurant without an upscale price," but let us translate: It's more Cheers than Moe's Tavern, more burger joint than gastropub. Regulars, or maybe those crazy college kids from nearby Fullerton College, order the Power Tower, an oversized beer dispenser the height and shape of a gigantic lava lamp. The house-baked soft pretzels are the defining mouthful of the night; the twisty, well-browned doughy loops are the natural symbiotic partner to anything hop-based you should drink. So oven-hot they burn the epidermis off your fingertips and crusted with perhaps too much salt, they will, as in that oft-quoted Seinfeld episode, make you thirsty. • Salt and Pepper Sports Bar

    Salt and Pepper Sports Bar

    1849 W. Orangethorpe Fullerton, CA 92833
    714-871-8650

The Salt and Pepper Shaker is known for serving up Denny's-style breakfast cuisine to hungry hordes of octogenarians. But this location has taken things a step further and added a state-of-the art sports bar that would put any of the drinking establishments around Anaheim stadium to shame. The large bar is well lit and nicely appointed, with wood-plank floors and neutral-tone brick walls. There is a respectable 11 beers on tap, including Widmer's Hef, Shock Top, Budweiser and Newcastle. In addition to framed black-and-white sports memorabilia, the lofty walls are adorned with seven massive flat-screen TVs flickering images of any number of sports tilts.
