Wing Nuts sports a bar perfect for lunchtime imbibery: After all, it's located in a Costa Mesa shopping center. Though their specialty is wings, they have a nice little drinking area with a respectable range of choices. The decor is corrugated, metallic and aviation-themed, featuring two massive wings from an old war bird salvaged from a plane graveyard in Nevada. The walls are also decked out with vintage aviation murals. The bar is fully outfitted with hard alcohol as well as several beers on draft from Budweiser and Bud Light to Newcastle, Guinness and Fat Tire. Read more about this Orange County bar or club >>
http://www.goodfoot.org/rollerdisco/info.htm To get your skate (and your skates) on, head over to Space is the Place in Mid-City, a roller disco party at World on Wheels — one of the Southland's few remaining full-scale roller disco rinks. Every fourth Saturday of the month, be-wheeled ladies and gents skate around to disco and funk and 80s, while their less-roller-inclined friends enjoy drinks and karaoke. http://www.xalosbar.com If Xalos Bar were a character from a play, it would be Blanche Dubois from Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire. The venue definitely looks better at night with assistance from some innovative lighting. Variously colored walls and a thatch-roof taco stand work to create a festive atmosphere, but might throw off clubbers expecting classier decor. The crowd is predominantly local and gets rather dense on weekends after 10 p.m. Xalos is equipped with a full bar and although the tenders might not keep on top of their specials, they can certainly whip up a decent classic. http://www.myspace.com/xo__lounge Attached to Bleu Restaurant, the XO Lounge brings a club atmosphere to Westminster. The lushly decorated room with its blue-and-pink-backlit liquor cabinet adds a classy feel to the full bar, which pours high-end liquors. Black-leather couches and booths surround the marble dance floor, which is doused with laser lights and a constantly running fog machine. XO Lounge also features a live DJ and an outdoor smoking area. Read more about this Orange County bar or club >>
http://www.yardhouse.com While this restaurant chain dots the American landscape coast to coast, mass consumerism hasn't dinged the Brea location's independent spirit. This is one of the better places for the craft-minded beer connoisseur to have a top-shelf drinking experience. Featuring 130 taps, a moderate wine selection and daily happy-hour specials (pints run from $3.50 to $4.25), there's a flavor here for every taste. Beers of note include the Blue Dog Sea Ale and selections from the Eel River Brewery in Humbolt County. Read more about this Orange County bar or club >>
http://www.yardhouse.com It can be argued the Yardhouse franchise is among the original gastropubs, with its emphasis on carefully crafted cuisine and unique mixed drinks. But Yardhouse is best-known for its vast beer selection, with 180 on tap. The selection changes slightly with the seasons, but a majority are available year-round. The Yardhouse also offers mixed drinks: cocktails, martinis, even beer combinations. The interior is dark, with rich, wooden booths and tables with low-slung lights hovering above. The best lighting can be found at the brushed, stainless-steel bar in the middle of the room, showing they know what matters here. Large, modern-art murals hang over black- leather booths, and there are more than a dozen flat-screen TVs spread throughout the room. The Yardhouse in Costa Mesa also features a patio that looks out onto Newport Boulevard. Read more about this Orange County bar or club >>
http://www.yucatangrill.com If the baffling neon color scheme doesn't dissuade you from entering, you'll be rewarded with a stunning offering of Caribbean specialties. http://www.ziings.com Ziing's owners consulted a feng shui master during the design, and the results seem to vindicate their expenditure. This applies particularly to the miso-seared ahi, which is sliced and arrayed on a black plate with a red spoon of Shanghai sauce, mixed greens, a cube of wasabi and shiitake-ginger "chopsticks" that look like Vienna roll cookies. The ahi itself is exquisite. Read more about this Orange County bar or club >>
http://www.zovs.com It may be in another one of those stultifyingly dull neighborhood centers, where everything looks like everything else, but leave it to James Beard Award-winner Zov Karamardian to shake up the Orwellian sameness with her brand of Middle Eastern-influenced cuisine and a cadre of delectable dessert pastries.
