http://www.gosababa.com Despite being located in a strip mall, Sababa possesses a surprisingly chic vibe. Sporting dim, yet vibrantly-hued lighting, the bar area is adorned with a dizzying geometric tower that could have been lifted from a modern art museum. Keeping with the motif, the walls also sport various art pieces. Bartenders offer up a full selection of liquors and 26 beers on tap. Fancier labels of suds include Stone IPA, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Lost Coast Downtown Brown and Paulaner Hef. There's a large covered patio outside that sports sofas, perfect for sipping one of the bar's specialty cocktails and listening to DJ's spin platters into the wee hours of the night. The Saloon is in Laguna Beach, and it says a lot about South County that we once heard this well-kept but tiny water hole referred to as a "dive." With no cover, few seats and zero attitude, the Saloon is a perfect refuge from the typical Affliction-afflicted, line-out-the-door Laguna Beach restaurant-turned-bar. It’s not too far from the beach, so you can get your surf on throughout the day and retire here for an evening of good drinks, so-so food, and an atmosphere unmatched in the rest of Laguna for its diversity of crowd. The décor evokes a classed-up frontier billiards room, but it's not like you have much room to turn your head and admire. Instead, focus on the glass in your hand: The drinks are stiff but subtle, and the bar's signature, homemade, pineapple-infused vodka comes off a lot less foofy than you'd expect—maybe because all the regulars are drinking it. The Salt and Pepper Shaker is known for serving up Denny's-style breakfast cuisine to hungry hordes of octogenarians. But this location has taken things a step further and added a state-of-the art sports bar that would put any of the drinking establishments around Anaheim stadium to shame. The large bar is well lit and nicely appointed, with wood-plank floors and neutral-tone brick walls. There is a respectable 11 beers on tap, including Widmer's Hef, Shock Top, Budweiser and Newcastle. In addition to framed black-and-white sports memorabilia, the lofty walls are adorned with seven massive flat-screen TVs flickering images of any number of sports tilts. http://www.myspace.com/sandpiperlounge Sandpiper Lounge in Laguna Beach is a legendary dive bar in coastal Orange County. How legendary? Esquire once named them one of the top dive bars in America, writing "If it's a dive, it's Christ-this-place-is-a-dive dive. If it's an Irish pub, it's not an 'Irish' pub. If it's a cocktail lounge, it's got some Tanqueray Ten and a bottle of good rye somewhere." This dive on the beach side of Pacific Coast Highway has been a hippie watering hole since the 1960s. Locals call it the “Dirty Bird.” Live music, plenty of beer, an occasional green (but not pine) scent floating through the air and fabulously unpretentious decor make it one of the most welcoming pubs in the county. Go there in the early afternoon, when the tourists are still around and mingling with the locals who’ll close the place down late into the morning, with more than a few tourists in tow. http://www.thesatellitela.com Everyone from Rilo Kiley and the White Stripes to the New York Dolls and Gossip has played at this indie-rock bastion, which for many years was known as Spaceland but is now called the Satellite. The Silver Lake bar has had several distinct incarnations, evolving from the longtime gay hangout Dreams into Pan, the live-music club that morphed into Spaceland in the mid-1990s. Although its narrow stage has hosted many notable national and international performers, including Dead Moon, Of Montreal, the Buzzcocks, Death Cab for Cutie, Pavement, Supergrass, the Detroit Cobras and Love With Arthur Lee, the venue is synonymous with the Silver Lake music scene, launching such crucial local indie icons as Beck, Possum Dixon, Silversun Pickups and Elliott Smith. More recently, the club has booked everyone from the Melvins to the Pipettes and Booker T. Jones. The Satellite has a full bar, and there's a separate bar (with a pool table) that's walled off from the rest of the club with see-through plastic like the Cone of Silence. Monday nights are generally no cover. Most shows begin at 9 p.m. Ages 21 & over. The bar has a small adjoining lot with valet parking, and street parking is also available, but read the posted signs, as some neighboring streets have zealously enforced permit-parking restrictions. http://www.sevillanightclub.com This Spanish-themed bar and restaurant has a wide assortment of rums. The candle-lined walls generate a warm, romantic ambiance, making this joint a nice place to take a date. But other walls are plastered with bullfighting posters as well as a Picasso-esque mural. Dig the beautiful glass water wall at the entrance. What this establishment is best known for is sangria. Poured fresh from the tap, it sports notes of citrus, red wine and cinnamon. Be careful, it's easy to over-imbibe with this one. Read more about this Orange County bar or club >>
http://www.pepperspianos.com Sgt. Pepper's Dueling Piano Cafe probably isn't the best place for wall flowers or lounge rats. Tables line the lower tier with all chairs facing toward a small stage where, true to the venue's name, two pianists have at each other by banging on their keyboards rather than each other's faces. Toss in a few drinks and some raunchy humor and you can imagine that this place can get pretty rowdy on a Friday night. Be prepared to sing and dance along because the performers pack LED flashlights to single out party poopers with a light to the face and a barrage of "Boos." All that said, Sgt. Pepper's is a great place to let loose and watch your friends make asses of themselves on stage. There's also a family-friendly show offered during the day! Sure, the Shady Nook is a dive, but only in the most affectionate sense of the term. Featuring air conditioning, clean floors and a wealth of diversions other than booze, this spot satisfies a diverse range of tastes. Patrons can enjoy digital dart games, Spider-Man pinball, two pool tables as well as the addictive Big Buck first-person shooter. But let us not forget the drinks. Though this bar is bereft of hard liquor, it serves a nice array of draft beers-including Michelob Amber Bock and a tasty Hefeweizen-as well as a small selection of wines, sakes and sojus. Shannon's is a sports bar with a locals-only vibe. If you're new meat, don't expect them to roll out the welcome mat. But do expect stiff drinks from the tall, extensive, supremely stocked full bar, which also includes a nice selection of draft beers (go Shock Top). The high-ceilinged, wood-paneled room has four flat screens flickering images of Lakers games, as well as one massive big-screen. Read more about this Orange County bar or club >>
http://www.sharkeez.net You'd be hard-pressed to find a day of the week when this Main Street, Huntington Beach mainstay isn't crowded. A fog machine, crimson laser lights and live DJ create a club-like atmosphere in the long, narrow bar; people will dance anywhere there is room to stand. Drinks are served in plastic and Styrofoam cups from the full bar, which also features a frozen-margarita machine and various bottled beers. The party continues on an outdoor patio, as well as a gated dining area on the extended sidewalk. Sharkeez also offers drink specials coinciding with football games and other sporting events. http://www.shoreultralounge.com The Shore Ultra Lounge of Long Beach is hard to miss, its large illuminated sign facing right towards 2nd Street. If you roll in on a Friday or Saturday night, expect a $10 cover unless you've entered your name on the online guest list, a feature that gets you in for free before 10 p.m. Shore's showroom features a small stage for live performances and what has been dubbed the Ice Room, a tiny glowing blue chamber where you can take iced vodka shots. A second dance room hosts a separate DJ and the main bar where glowing bottles of liquor line a giant "X" suspended from the ceiling. Bar service is generally quick and crowd activities can vary from good-natured bumping and grinding to some mild moshing at the foot of the stage. Just a heads up: stripper pole.
