That's what happens at Newport Beach Brewing Co., where the bros and bro-ettes of the county's glitziest burg congregate either before or instead of a night in the clubs at the tip of the peninsula. But unlike so much in coastal OC, there's not much pretense here. The crowd is pretty, yeah, but everyone's dressed casually. The menu is as massive and as greasy as you'd like. The digs are spacious, inviting and smell only slightly of seafood (the place used to be a fish market). The beers? Meticulously crafted for tastiness. While taking the kids to their favorite pizza place is well and good, sometimes the priority is a quality beer to go with Mom and Dad's dinner. Few pizza restaurants brew their own beers as tasty as Pizza Port, which won our editorial 2010 Best Beer Selection. This San Diego-based brewery/pizzeria features guest beers as well as in-house brews to pair with a selection of flavor-boosted topping combinations in the thick, chewy, gourmet, all-American style of pizza. They also sell white pizza. There's no tomato sauce; it's brushed with garlic olive oil, and the pizzeria-standard mozzarella is punctuated with dollops of surprisingly good ricotta cheese. One could easily make the mistake of thinking only pretentious connoisseurs need drop in, but nothing could be further from the truth. The staff is warm and inviting and more than willing to make suggestions on the ample beer list. True to its name, this joint brews in-house as evidenced by the massive steel fermentation tanks behind the bar. Labels pay homage to the surrounding neighborhood and include Red Hill Red, and Blimp Hangar Pale Ale. Massive hand-colored pictures adorn the north and south walls and feature images of Tustin at the turn of the 20th Century and the El Toro airfield in the 1940s.
