  • Disneyland Resort

    Disneyland Resort

    1313 S. Harbor Blvd. Anaheim, CA 92802
    714-781-4000

http://disney.go.com Disneyland is in Anaheim, and we can write a lot about this place—so let’s go instead with one of the best rides around. It isn't every day you can travel to Bengal and go on a thrilling adventure in search of Indiana Jones. Once you get in line, the park's setting is completely changed. It's an adventure in itself to reach the loading area, as you go through different caves, avoiding diamond-shaped steps, and watch the mini instructional film. The Disneyland ride's illusions and projections vary depending on which door you go through, and the Jeep is bumpy, as though you're actually driving through the rough terrain of an ancient temple in the Amazon. You pass snakes, fire, savages with blow darts and a mummy chamber—but it isn't until the giant boulder threatens to crash into the Jeep that you finally encounter Indy and save him. There isn't any other ride that offers the fun, adrenalin-rush satisfaction of saving the charismatic archeologist. More >>

  • Fullerton Arboretum

    Fullerton Arboretum

1900 Associated Road Fullerton, CA 92831
    714-278-3579

http://www.fullertonarboretum.org The Fullerton Arboretum is in Fullerton. It’s the county’s best place to see a bunch of plants. And it also has the Clark Home. This preserved Victorian-era home was originally built for and occupied by Fullerton physician Dr. George C. Clark and stood at the corner of Amerige and Harvard (now Lemon). In 1972, the house was moved to its current location in the Fullerton Arboretum and now hosts tours and workshops that present the lifestyle and culture of Victorian America to guests. It's sometimes hard to imagine a Victorian Orange County?hell, it's sometimes hard to imagine an Orange County pre-South Coast Plaza?but Heritage House is keeping the flame alive. The house also hosts a collection of Victorian medical artifacts, so if your kids seem uninterested in the idea of an educational experience, you can always punch it up by telling them the house is haunted by the victims of turn-of-the-century medical practices. Placentia Ave. and Swan Drive Costa Mesa, CA 92626

http://www.ocmetrains.org Goat Hill Junction is in Fairview Park in Costa Mesa. Every third weekend of the month since 1989, the Orange County Model Engineers host free train rides on 1.5-, 2.5- and 3.5-scale equipment. It's like riding on Grandpa's old train set! Wind through wildflowers, past the Costa Mesa golf course and the occasional birthday party in the park, and over a wooden bridge, all in less than 15 minutes! The men and women in the club maintain all the equipment, which you can jaw with any of them about. They love questions—especially from young'uns! And you might even score a quick tour through the old rail cars in which they store the models. So you can then apply what you learned to your own models. (Wait, what kind of modeling were you thinking about?). The place to sing “Last of the Steam-Powered Trains” and really mean it, and not in an ironic way. More >>

    714-997-2789

http://www.hullabaloosclubhouse.com Hullabaloo’s Clubhouse is in Orange. Need a place to let the kids run wild when it's too hot, too rainy, too whatever? Searching for a "bribe spot" that doesn't involve singing vermin? Since 2005, parents have been singing praises to Hullabaloos Clubhouse. There's a rock-climbing wall; an inflatable obstacle course; a giant clubhouse structure with a long, twisty tube slide; a puppet-show theater; air hockey and foosball tables; even a karaoke stage for the little rock stars. (There's also a toddler room open to kids of all ages.) If the kids need some energy-regeneration time, there are squishy bean bags to sink into and pizza to munch. Though the clubhouse is mainly used for birthday events, they have "open play" times on Mondays and Tuesdays (10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-8 p.m.), plus weekday times when there are no parties scheduled. (Just call in and check before loading up the brood.) More >>
