Zorro Unmasked

His name? Don Diego. His nickname? The Curse of Capistrano. If you’re thinking some tax-dollar-oinking South County honcho or OG on Alipaz St., you’re off by 90 years and, literally, on the wrong page. Hero of a pulp-magazine short story in 1919, Don Diego became Zorro, the sword-wielding champion of the oppressed, in a Douglas Fairbanks movie the following year. Check out costumes, masks, swords, props, scripts and posters from the big-screen Zorro (Fairbanks, Tyrone Power, Guy Williams, Antonio Banderas—and costar Catherine Zeta Jones) and advertising artifacts from his Disney TV years, including lunchboxes, toys, puzzles, shoes and jewelry. Our #1 zorro (Spanish for fox)? Mrs. Michael Douglas in the 2005 Banderas flick.
