Wicked

How is there not yet a Wicked movie, based on the subversive take on the Wizard of Oz’s wicked witches that’s still running on Broadway after more than seven years? Most of the other big musicals of the past 20 years—Rent, Hairspray, The Producers, Mamma Mia!—already have their film adaptations out. And when you add in the boost the musical got from the song “Defying Gravity” getting the Midas-touch Glee treatment (not to mention original cast members Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel appearing on that show), things just get more befuddling. The silver lining is, however, that many of those adaptations aren’t actually any good, and since there’s no Wicked movie, you can still act super-cultured by seeing a musical that you didn’t first come across in a middle-of-the-night-airing on TBS.

Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: March 9. Continues through April 3, 2011
